GROVE is a virtual network on the topics of organisations, violations and everyday life. The Grove Network will provide a framework through which a number of outputs will evolve, including; research project bids, publications, seminars and conferences.
The GROVE website provides an overview of the network (information on its aims, objectives and current work) as well as offering links to the web sites within each participating university. Further, links will be available to related sites such as UN, WHO, EU and NGOs.
The network brings together work that is often kept separate, on: gender power relations and other social divisions, organisations and management, violence and violation, globalisation and transnationalisation. In so doing, a strong basis to the work of the network is conceptual underpinnings from social science work on everyday social practices and violation, extending the study of violence from individual acts to organisational and supraorganisational perspectives and practices on violations.
Thus fundamental to our understanding and definition of violation is a range of practices that include economic, policy, social and emotional as well as physical acts. In this way we move beyond the core focus of much current work on violence. Of particular note are the themes of: class, gender, 'race' and other social divisions; policy development and implementation around violence and violation; organisational policies and cultures of violation; managerial practices, such as human resource management; interrelations of organisations, families and violation; transnationalisation of organisations and violations.
GROVE brings together researchers from the social sciences, including gender and women's studies, organisation studies, management studies, social psychology, sociology, political science and policy studies, and violence studies. It has a strong anti-oppressive orientation. We aim to develop transdisciplinary rather than interdisciplinary approaches.
GROVE is UK-wide, European, global and transnational in its span in two main ways: in the geographical spread of the researchers; and in the interest in UK, European (especially EU), global and transnational processes. This will facilitate research that considers the same or similar research issues from several different global locations, for example, the activities of multinational companies.
